The Microinsurance Innovation Facility was established in 2008 to extend insurance to low-income people in the developing world. Backed by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and housed in the International Labour Organization's Social Finance Programme, the Facility seeks to enable the microinsurance sector so that millions of working poor are able to access a wider range of insurance products that provide better value for money, and to make informed choices on how to manage risks.
The Microinsurance Innovation Facility awards Innovation Grants in order to help institutions develop new microinsurance products and models by covering their start-up costs and some of the losses likely to be incurred during the project. Naya Jeevan was one of the few recipients selected from over 100 applications to receive an innovation grant for providing affordable insurance coverage for the poor.
