Naya Jeevan is happy to announce the launch of our Ramadan Calendar Campaign. Unilever, Hilal Sweets & Allianz-EFU are generously sponsoring the calendars and 100% of the donated proceeds will be used towards 12 months of health coverage for children studying at partner NGO schools. The first 1500 children to be covered under the Naya Jeevan Health Plan under our Ramadan Calendar Campaign are in the flood-affected areas of Dir and Charsadda, Pakistan.

Participate in Naya Jeevan's Global Ramadan Campaign and give your child a 30-day Ramadan calendar. Each calendar has 30 flaps (for each day of the month) and behind each flap, children will find a Ramadan teaching. We are looking for dynamic volunteers in all major cities to help distribute the Ramadan calendars globally. Calendars can be purchased online from our website, key outlets in Pakistan, from a local volunteer in most major cities, and in-person from our office in Karachi.

Sponsoring a child in need can mean the difference between despair and hope. We want to raise $30/calendar and use the contributions to provide students in partner NGO-run schools in Pakistan with social protection through the Naya Jeevan health plan for 1 whole year. Please reach out to your social/professional/academic networks as well and inform them that for just $30 they can make a big difference in NGO-run school children's health and future life. Your efforts are much appreciated. See more details and purchase online on our Ramadan Calendar Campaign webpage. Ramadan Mubarak!

Naya Jeevan in collaboration with Ibtida Rehabilitation Center held an anti-smoking/tobacco workshop at Espresso Coffee Houses' office. Naya Jeevan consistently provides Value Added Services to Naya Jeevan Health Plan members, especially in preventive healthcare services and education. Ibtida has been working in the field of anti-smoking and drug rehabilitation since 1985. Espresso Coffee Houses are a leading group of cafes in Pakistan and are members of Naya Jeevan's Health Plan.

The workshop was an interactive session conducted in two batches (the morning shift and the evening shift). Reverend Julian of Ibtida was the chief speaker. He has a wealth of experience not only on smoking and tobacco related addictions, but also regarding common drug addictions in Pakistan. He spoke about the common types of tobacco products, routes of use, contents of tobacco related products, and the common reasons of the use of these products. Most of the information was elicited out of the audience. Then, Dr. Aftab from Naya Jeevan talked about the medical effects of tobacco related products, and Joel (a rehabilitated addict/smoker) talked about his experiences. This was followed by a Question and Answer session with the workshop participants.

The objectives of the workshop were to create a rapport with the participants and try to understand the reasons why they used tobacco products, to make them understand the health risks posed to them because of tobacco products, to tell them about the dangers of passive smoking and how smoking isn't a personal choice like coffee or tea because smoke diffuses through the air, to create a sense of responsibility amongst smokers to not smoke in public areas, and to inform them where they could seek more help if they chose to.

Forbes Asia Magazine and Forbes.com featured an article on Naya Jeevan and CEO Asher Hasan. An excerpt is reproduced below, read the full article on Forbes.com.

In April Margaret Fernandes, a 37-year-old homemaker in Karachi, experienced a sharp pain in her side. But unlike many people in Pakistan and elsewhere in the developing world, Fernandes had access to top-notch medical care. After an ultrasound diagnosed kidney stones, she received treatment at the Jinnah Hospital Kidney Center. Her husband, Augustine, earns $3,500 a year working for a chain of coffee shops, supporting Margaret and nine other family members, and the procedure would've cost a third of his income.

The Fernandes family, however, paid nothing for Margaret's treatment. Employees at small companies in the developing world are almost always uninsured, but through a program called Naya Jeevan, the Fernandes family receives subsidized health insurance from Augustine's employer. Without the insurance Margaret might have taken painkillers and hoped for the best, taken out a short-term high-interest loan from an informal lender or sold possessions. "We don't have the money to pay these expenses," she says.

Naya Jeevan has been invited back to participate at the Clinton Global Initiative's Annual Meeting being held in New York City in September 2010. Naya Jeevan's commitment "Scaling the Emerging World’s First HMO for the Poor," is featured as one of 5 exemplary CGI commitments in the "Strengthening Market-Based Solutions" Action Area. The Action Area is described by CGI as:

Traditional approaches to aid are not enough to address the great global challenges of our time. Market-based solutions show incredible promise to solve these daunting problems on a systemic and widespread level. These approaches, however, are still in a nascent stage. Corporations are researching and developing better business practices that meet social and environmental bottom lines while producing profits. Non-profits are pioneering enterprise-based models that offer potential for long-term sustainability. Governments are contributing their resources to encourage and support market-based approaches. At the 2010 Annual Meeting, members will discuss the best strategies for bringing these solutions to scale, so the benefits can be felt by more of the four billion people who subsist on less than $3 a day.

Naya Jeevan's commitment was featured on stage at the Clinton Global Initiative's Fifth Annual Meeting in 2009 where President Bill Clinton presented Naya Jeevan's CEO Asher Hasan with a certificate of recognition. See our earlier news article below for more information.

Naya Jeevan's CEO and TED Fellow Asher Hasan spoke on the main stage at TEDIndia's second day in Mysore, India during the "Reinventing Development" session. His talk entitled "Main Bhi Pakistan Hoon" (I too am Pakistan) was an alternate perspective on Pakistan as viewed through the lens of six of Pakistan's most dynamic and uber-talented photographers. It emphasized the need for Indians and Pakistanis to understand each other's narrative and work together to address the needs of the hundreds of millions of ordinary citizens who struggle to maintain their livelihoods and their dignities.

Asher Hasan shows a glimpse of ordinary Pakistani citizens through photography from around the country. His images challenge stereotypes -- and reveal the humanity behind arresting symbols such as veils, beards, fences. The imagery carries a powerful lesson: we must embrace our common humanity to fight poverty. Chris Anderson takes the stage and calls for all the Pakistani attendees to stand up: they faced many difficulties to be here, in India, today. An emotional moment for all.

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Asher Hasan's message of peace from Pakistan can be viewed on the TED website or on YouTube. You can also view and download the Slides from his talk.

Naya Jeevan's in-house medical team has recently embarked upon the Free Medical Screening Workshops where they visit each and every member of the Naya Jeevan Health Plan and provide a complete physical (head to toe) examination, and personal health & hygiene counseling. With these direct interactions, we hope to develop trust and confidence in the Naya Jeevan Health Plan and also assess the health status of the Naya Jeevan beneficiaries for early detection of serious illnesses or diseases. This is an ongoing Value Added Service for current and future members under the Naya Jeevan Health Plan.

Through a novel 'micro'-insurance plan, Naya Jeevan will leverage Corporate/SME/NGO partnerships, collective social responsibility, a unique cost-sharing model and novel distribution channels to access and empower household staff (drivers, cooks, maids, guards, etc. and their families) working for corporate officers/managers as well as low-income corporate employees and contract workers (factory/construction workers, waiters, teachers, etc.). As part of a comprehensive approach, this also includes providing primary and preventative healthcare education, as well as workshops on sanitation, hygiene, environmental protection, and relevant skill development training to low-income families.
